Within the past few years, the Common Core State Standards have decreased in its modesty, and increased in their ruthlessness. Branching across the educational system from elementary school to high school, common core standards are aiming to standardize learning in English, math, and science. Similarly, common core, compared to all other state standards, has a sole purpose to teach students the information that they need to know in order to be successful in college entry courses. However, the newly developed, and evolved Common Core State Standards are non beneficial, and negatively impact the classroom environment by creating a lack of connection between the students, teachers, and learning.

Over the past two decades, the National Assessment of Educational Progress, an organization that keeps track of testing scores nationwide, has shown a positive impact on test scores. Until recently, that was the case; however, when the common core system was introduced, the scores began to drop. For example, between the years 2013, and 2015, fourth grade math levels declined roughly one point. Eighth grade math, and reading averages, also reduced by at least two points. Not only are point averages dwindling, but proficiency, and advance ranking are subsiding as well; in reading, only thirty six percent of fourth graders, and thirty four percent of eighth graders achieved proficiency. “The percentage of students scoring in the lowest level, below basic increased for fourth, and eighth grade math as well as for eighth grade reading from 2013” (Heitin in Education Week 2016).
