Common Core Standards bring up numerous debates but the true question is, can it be successful? Michigan State University researchers William H. Schmidt and Nathan A. Burroughs state that Common Core Standards will improve the quality of mathematics being learned and address the unequal opportunities in U.S schools. On the opposite hand, a senior fellow at the Brookings Institute, Tom Loveless, indicates that Common Core Standards are “slim at best” of being successful when compared to other similar polices in the past.

The issue of quality lies in the inadequacy of mathematics. 26 percent of U.S. 12th graders reach the threshold of proficiency in math on the National Assessment of Education Progress (National Center for Education Statistics, 2010). education, so what’s so bad about implementing this into schools? First and foremost, the whole premise of Common Core Standards are to prepare children for work and college. Preparation for work or college as reflected in the Common Core Standards emphasis testing and reduce social and imaginative development, and interest and intellectual enjoyment. This goal of preparation increases reading of nonfiction and decreases the reading of fiction, and having students read and write for work or a college course not relating their feelings to a reading selection (Spring, 2014). As a future educator the primary concern should be the child’s happiness and
