The theory of evolution by Charles Darwin is one of the theories that showed humanity, a new way of thinking. Due to its content regarding the origin of species and the contradictions to the religious teachings, the theory of evolution raises many controversies including whether it should be taught to future generations. After the Scopes Trial in the 1920s (CITE), people formed various alternative theories about the origin of specie, one of them called the theory of intelligent design. The laws related to this controversy evolved from banning the teaching of the theory of evolution to requiring that both the theory of evolution and intelligent design be taught. Since god and religion give humans faith and the meaning to live, to be moral agents, people believe that the new theory about the origin of specie would degrade the human’s purpose, dignity and value of life. Yet, individuality in humanity doesn’t depend on how humans were created. Nonetheless, the natural cycle itself shows that everything has a purpose and we coexist. The functionality of the human brain, originated from evolution, makes human moral agents, not purely god or religion. The society and humanity as a collective group make ourselves the center of the universe, even when physically we’re not. Alternatively, the theory of evolution may increase the human dignity because it is the result of our ability to comprehend the nature of life. Other than Christianity, god and evolution can coexist in other religions. The belief of pantheistic views allows god of natural elements in Buddhism and Hinduism.
