The Hemingway Hero A Hemingway hero, or code hero, is a character created by Ernest Hemingway, that obtains certain characteristics, and lives their life in a way that makes them honorable and respectable all while enduring pain. The traits of strength, courage, lack of emotion, and many more remain with the character throughout the entirety of the story, or until the character dies. This way of writing characters has caught on and now code heros can be seen in modern stories and even in television or movies. A story containing a code hero is Hemingway’s “Hills Like White Elephants,” and a modern day movie containing one is Disney’s Moana. Sharon Steed from entertainthekids.com wrote that director of Moana, Ron Clements stated “she’s athletic, nimble, compassionate and incredibly smart. She has a never-say-die attitude and a profound connection to the ocean.” It is through Moana’s “never-say-die attitude” that makes her a Hemingway hero. In the movie, Moana sets out to save her village which is threatened by a horrible darkness. The darkness would bring no life to the island in which her village inhabited, so it would ultimately lead to the death of Moana’s village. This fear of death is another attribute to what makes Moana a code hero. The idea of death is what drives Moana to voyage out to sea. While traveling across the ocean, Moana comes face to face with many challenges, but she faces them without doubting herself. Also, Moana pushes onward, all while knowing that her family and village is suffering. The movie shows Moana from the time she was a child all the way through when she became the new leader of her village. Throughout all of this time, Moana was honored and respected by her people. It is through Moana’s constant honor, pain endured, and fear of death that make her more than the typical hero. Although Moana doesn’t express extreme amounts of masculinity and does not show power through drinking alcohol, she is still a Hemingway
