may ask what is the Divine 9, well, the Divine 9 are 9 black fraternities and sororities, all or if not most of these organizations can be found at nearly every College or University there is. The Divine 9 consists of Alpha Phi Alpha, Alpha Kappa Alpha, Kappa Alpha Psi, Omega Psi Phi, Delta Sigma Theta, Phi Beta Sigma, Zeta Phi Beta, Sigma Gamma Rho, and Iota Phi Theta. These organizations help build and create sister and brotherhood. People spend hundreds of thousands of dollars just in their first year of being in these organizations. The first part is like a $900 (differs with every organization) fee just to pledge at this time you don’t even know if your in or not. The other costs is the apparel that you MUST have. Sororities are a society for female students only at a College or University, typically for social purposes. These four Sororities were founded mostly at Howard University, Alpha Kappa Alpha really paved the way for sororities it was the first black women's sorority to come about. All of these four Sororities have something about them. Most people would can distinguish who represent by the way you carry yourself. Most people have this idea that you have to act a certain way to be an AKA or a certain way to be a delta but whatever a person decides is truly up to the individual. People tend to say that AKA’s are stuck up and boujee, deltas are rough and act like men and sigmas are a little bit of both. Having people in my life who are all of these things have made that idea disappear in my head. They tell my that all of the 4 sororities focus on one major things which is sisterhood. They prepare you for life as a woman and instruct you on how you should carry yourself. It’s exactly the same with the Fraternities as well. A Fraternity is a society of men in college or at a university, typically for social purposes. In the Divine Nine there are Five Fraternities: Alpha Phi Alpha, Kappa Alpha Psi, Omega Phi Psi, Phi Beta Sigma and Iota Phi Theta. Going greek is not the cheapest thing in college, my family started saving for this when me and my brother were first born so that we wouldn’t be stressed out having to work two- three jobs just to go greek your freshman year. In the first paragraph I talked about how expensive pledging was just for your first year but after college you may choose to continue into a grad chapter. With going greek there are many events that you have to attend and those events cost money. Some line brothers or sisters may choose to go on a trip that also cost money. Mostly if not everything you do in greek life will cost money and trying to have 2 jobs, be a full time college student, participate in greek activities and community service on top of you having friends and family is a lot to handle. Most people struggle when going greek just because of all the things they add on to their schedule. Pledging as a freshman probably isn’t the best choice but if it’s something that you want it’s totally worth it. Being in a fraternity or Sorority comes with many negative and positive sides, but why not give it a try. College should be all about new experiences but from what I have seen it is nothing to play with.
