A leader, in my opinion, is someone who people can trust, has a vision for the organisation and communicates this vision with the people along with motivating and inspiring them to engage in the pursuit of that vision. A leader must be able to foresee change in many areas including technology, the marketplace and the economy.
Successful leadership is the ability to influence and sometimes convince others of their opinions and actions. For me, Congers idea of “the art of persuasion” demonstrates how a great leader can be instrumental to a successful organisation. When a leader communicates their vision in the correct way, people understand what is required regarding the implementation and what the desired outcome or success is. Communicating the vision throughout the organisation ensures the whole organisation is familiar with the goals and objectives of the implementation. People will never give out about being communicated with too much, in fact, they love being in the know, as Jim Broadhead, the CEO of Florida Power and Light said, "It’s virtually impossible to communicate too much. I’ve never heard a single employee anywhere complain that he or she is being kept too informed."
A successful leader will empower their team, allow people to make mistakes, learn and develop. Trusting in the people, enables them trust to in their leader, it allows them to become more engaged in the implementation, thus helping the overall implementation and development of the individual. Authoritative leaders inspire an entrepreneurial atmosphere for the implementation but may not be best if the person leading the implementation is less qualified than the people working with them, for example; a team of experts. The affiliative style works by creating an emotional bond within the organisation. To refer back to Congers’ “Art of Persuasion”, he talks about showing the correct amount of emotion. By showing too much people may doubt your ‘clearheadedness’ therefore it is important to show enough in order to demonstrate that you are fully committed to the end goal. Conger also mentions about adjusting the tone of the arguments according to the situation, be strong when needed and softer when it is required.
The democratic style of leadership builds consensus through participation. It is used by a leader that needs the team to buy into a decision, goal or if the leader needs fresh ideas from qualified teammates. This can be a successful style of leadership for implementing a new strategy because once a leader gets support from the team the implementation can move forward faster, with more committed people and ultimately be more
