Dear Members of the Selection Committee, I, Rebecca Hsu, am applying for the 2023-24 VP of Public Relations position. During my freshman year, I was hesitant to join FBLA due to personal fears and did not continue my journey here after the first meeting. This year, I was able to muster enough courage to put myself out there, join projects, and compete. My experiences this year at FBLA have shaped me in ways indescribable and built upon various skills, which I want to share with future members, by leading our chapter in a new direction.
Throughout my life, I have been quite active in several organizations. The first club I joined was the Hamlet Handy Helpers 4-H Club. As my project, I rented a farm and raised corn and soybeans with the goal to earn enough money to pay for my college education. I have learned a lot about business, finance, and agronomy through my 4-H projects. I have also learned how to confidently deliver speeches during the club meetings.
I have led many club activities such as concession stands, volunteer services, and other community led activities. I have become a great leader to many of these kids as president of our school club, S-Club. I am in very good standing academically and known for my exceptional work ethic. I have matured with each of the trials and events I have encountered that have come my way during my senior year. The skills I have gained over the course of the year will help me towards my main career goal in mind, professional.
I undertook the role of serving on the Elections Board Committee and intended to put forth my full effort into a position I had the privilege of receiving. In my experience being a student leader, I have not lead others on a statewide level nor had any impact on this level. The role I campaigned for and won elevated my passion for leadership. Being given a platform in which I was allowed to spread my ability to advocate was an event that significantly made me who I am today. My responsibilities were to cooperatively work with a group of students and reenact an official voting for roles in government.
During my time in NCL I held board positions of Treasurer, VP of Philanthropy, Corresponding Secretary, and the Parliamentarian and committee positions of recognition chair and inspiration. All of these positions entailed a different skill that will continue to help me grow as a young female in the world and business
October 2016 I obtain my bachelors degree in business administration. While I was in school, I wanted to continue to work with the youth in the community. My ultimate endeavor since attending community college has been my involvement in school, specifically with Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society. As an engineering major I am limited to a diminutive amount of free time, due to the quantity and difficulty of my classes. However, this limitation and the fact that my ride to school is a two hour trip on public transportation, has not stopped me from participating in extracurricular activities. Applying my time management and responsibility skills that I acquired from taking several math base classes at the same time, I managed to become a member of clubs and attain leadership roles. I first became the Vice President of Service, for Phi Theta Kappa and organized service events on campus and outside of campus.
Being an active member of civic engagement in both my community and my high school has served me great pride within these past four years. I knew before my freshman year that I wanted to get involved right away in hopes that I would make friends and help some people out, but I truly had no idea what kind of impact my involvement would give me. I started off by simply enrolling in some clubs, including KeyClub and FBLA, but then worked my way up to eventually becoming President of both clubs by my senior year. I have also been a voted class officer all four years of high school, and won Class President my senior year. I am a leader in my school's SADD chapter as a member of the Executive Council as well, and find leadership around other female athletes as a four year varsity athlete myself.
While in high school, I was a member of our school’s chapter of the National Honor Society, the Varsity baseball team, a part-time lifeguard for our school pool, a math tutor for students in need, and I was on the Community Education Student Advisory Board. My senior year I was lucky enough to be elected by my peers to be the president of my school’s chapter of the National Honor Society. Previously, I traveled down to Delaware Technical Community College to attend a leadership conference involving The Special Olympics of Delaware. I have recently applied to attend this year's New Castle County Vo Tech's Unity Day with other high schools in the district, and another Fall Leadership Conference in Dover, Delaware. Currently, I am the Captain for St. George’s Junior Varsity Volleyball team. This leadership opportunity helps me take charge of my team and guide them to success in the sport. My knowledge from previously playing, and my responsibility on the court helped push me to this position.
