Every organization has leaders and followers, as they are interdependent to each other. Leadership is a fundamental part of management and the foundation of an organization. Leaders are visionaries who develop the strategies that will move the organization forward. They are the impetus behind institutional change ("Critial Leadership Skills," n.d.). Leaders exhibit the behaviors they want to see from others, and act as a mentor for both individuals and teams. Leaders must be able to see the big picture, convey that vision to people and mobilize them around that shared vision, guiding the staff towards the accomplishment of a defined objective ("Critial Leadership Skills," n.d.). Leaders have followers, whereas managers have people who work for them, completing specific tasks. In order for management to finish assigned tasks, the leaders must make sure that the staff trusts and respect. Leaders also need to empower staff, making them feel valued as individuals. Ideally, this will keep the staff engaged and interested in their work. The ultimate goal is the keep productivity and morale high. If morale is high, management and staff will work to the best of their ability ("Go2HR," 2016).

Leadership skills take time to develop. The goal of a leader is to keep management and staff motivated to complete their delegated tasks. To accomplish this a leader needs to communicate effectively, and encourage input from employees. Leaders also need to put others before themselves, understanding and showing concern for management and staff. This helps build a rapport with the staff and elicits an environment of trust.
