Throughout most of the world, the Society of Jesus is best known for their schools and universities. Although those are wonderful things, in a time when many are searching for the greater meaning of life, the spiritual aspect of Jesuit life can help find this greater meaning. This is the concept introduced nearly 500 years ago by St. Ignatius Loyola, the founder of the Jesuits.
Saint Ignatius was a Spanish soldier who discovered his calling and turned to God after suffering nearly fatal wounds in battle. He founded the Society of Jesus in 1540, telling the early Jesuits to go out and find God in all things. This is the main concept of Jesuit Spirituality.
Ignatian spirituality is rooted in the absolute knowledge that God plays an active part in our world. The spiritual path laid out by Ignatius is a way of discerning God's presence in our everyday lives and doing something about it.
