The purpose of the Dietary Guidelines for Americans is to inform the development of Federal food, nutrition, and health policies and programs. It is a critical tool for professionals to help Americans make healthy choices in their daily lives. It also helps prevent chronic diseases.
The Dietary Guidelines for Americans was developed for nutrition and health professionals to help all individuals ages 2 years and older consume a healthy diet. The information used in the Dietary Guidelines is for developing Federal food, nutrition, and health policies and programs. Dietary Guidelines is the basis for Federal nutrition education materials. It is designed for the public and for the nutrition education components of HHS and USDA food programs. This edition of the Dietary Guidelines offers 5 overarching Guidelines and a number of Key Recommendations with specific nutritional targets and dietary limits. The Dietary Guidelines for Americans also help people reach and maintain a healthy weight.

Healthy eating patterns limits are saturated fats and trans fats, added sugars, and sodium. It is important to consume less than 10 percent of calories per day from added sugars.
