Chapter nine deals with two main subjects: diversity and communication. We saw in class and in the book, brief definitions and problems related to diversity as: discrimination, prejudice, stereotypes, and actions to overcome those issues. In communication, we went over tips and ideas to improve our relations and conversations with people in the daily basis, and in situations where criticism and anger are present. Over the past years, America has had many immigrants come from all over the world to become American citizens, which allowed America to become a diverse country. The different cultures, languages, and the races make America the melting pot. While some people believe America embracing diversity creates unity, it can be argued that America is moving toward a new standard in which diversity and individuality are encouraged more than uniformity and conformity because people are being taught different languages and some people combine or teach others their culture. Children all over the country are being taught many different languages. Learning different languages is important because our country is more diverse than others.
How could diversity in the United States potentially lead to collapse? There are many elements that contribute to collapse. Whether it’s on a larger scale, like a country, or on a smaller scale, like a family. There is an infinite amount. But the most important one, is diversity.
Today in class we talked about America and if we cherish diversity. At first the majority of the class said “yes” including myself, but as we finished our debate most of us had gone from “yes” to “no.” Also, in the articles we read in class earlier last week, Patel states that even though Washington had slaves, MLK junior still looked up to him as a great leader, he also states that Washington wanted America to stand for something different. I believe that one of the methods I would bring diversity into the campus community is through my interests. I am interested in astrophysics, computer science, and tennis. Some may think that living in South Florida provides quite a bit of diversity, but in such a large city as Miami, our day to day activities do not actually expose us to a numerous variety of cultures as one might think. Attending the Diversity Experience at WPI would allow me the experience of meeting people of distinctive cultures and traditions in a setting that is not typical of South Florida. It would provide me the opportunity to converse and share experiences with other students that may have similar interests, such as robotics and engineering, and are seeking their place in the world. The organization I work for, Starbucks is highly diversified. In my opinion, Starbucks successfully employs each of the seven diversity components: “authentic leadership commitment, clear organizational communication, inclusive recruitment practices, long-term retention strategies, incorporating diversity into main work of the organization, diversity management metrics, and expansive external relationships” (CanÌas, Sondak 2014). With that being said, Starbucks could improve by incorporating diversity into main work of the organization. One way Starbucks proves their commitment to diversity is authentic by holding a diverse board of directors. Of the seven board members, three are women and one of these women is of an African descent.
They could ensure all employees are properly trained on diversity and anti-discrimination polices during orientation classes and on a semi-annual basis. Also, the company needs to ensure they are promoting and advancing diverse individuals for all positions in the company. This would show everyone that they committed to improving diversity at the company and their restaurants. How can they manage diversity throughout the organization?
