Developing effective communication in health and social care

Communication is important and a vital part of everyday life, especially within a health and social care setting to make sure messages are given and received. Communication is in fact, the interactive process to exchange information or to express someone’s ideas through thoughts, feelings etc.

Interpersonal communication/interpersonal interactions:
Interpersonal communication is communicating or exchanging information through face to face interactions. Interpersonal skills are important as it is the ability to interact or communicate well will people.

This is used a lot within health and social care, such as for appointment cards, prescriptions, medical notes, reports, emails, communication passports etc. Communication passports are used for people who are in a care setting and helps pass on key information about the service user. This is one example of a way of written communication is used in health and social care.

Oral
Oral communication is probably one of the main forms of communication used in health and social care. Different forms of oral communication can be one to one and in a group. Oral communication is the process of exchanging information by word of mouth.

Jargon is an example of oral communication used within a professional workplace. However it’s hard for someone to understand if they do not belong in that professional group, such as ASC, for someone who has autism.
