As a student, there’s always ways to improve your writing. Before taking this class, I knew that I wanted to improve my writing, but wasn’t quite sure how. Taking College English is different than taking English in High School, because your writing must have more dynamics. Its more than just sounding good its looking good and appealing to your audience. This semester learning how to read with a purpose really changed the way I read and even looked at things. I always would get so bored reading unless it was a book or magazine that I really enjoyed, but taking this English class helped me realize that everything is written with a purpose. For example, the Sedaris Me Talk Pretty piece we read, the purpose of him telling his story was to share his experience of learning a new language and how difficult it was, but in the end, it was worth it. Learning about Rhetorical lenses was one of the main things I learned from this class. During this course I also learned to use commas better, because I never realized just how big of problem I had using them. A comma can change the meaning of something so it’s important that they’re used correctly. Another thing that I learned this semester that I felt was important was about shitty first drafts. I have a lot of problems just getting my writing going but understanding that I’m not the only person that has this problem and that there’s ways to help with that has helped me improve as a writer. I learned just to get my ideas out no matter how bad they are just, so I can get something going and work from there.
