Genetically modified food has significantly affected the nation. Some genetically modified food has positive effects, whereas others have not. Genetically modified food is often referred to as genetically engineered food or bioengineered food (Heif). Some benefits of genetically modified food include potentially healthier food, tastier food as well as growing faster plants or animals; just to name a few. However, potential risks of genetically modified include potentially harmful effects towards the plants or animals which are unexpected. Other risks include inbreed with natural organisms which could lead to extinction (Heif).
Some food sources that have been genetically modified include tomatoes, squash, other crops and meats as well. These alternations continue to prosper because of the benefits. However, there is much more to be considered then the mere health factors of it. Food that has been genetically modified, has went to cause concern to the Food and Drug Administration because of production and labeling. There are concerns that inserted genes into particular foods can cause allergic reactions (Heif). In order to help control and manage these concerns, the FDA applied a rule in 2001 that requires food that is genetically modified to be submitted 120 days prior to marketing (Heif). During this 120-day period, food is studied through scientific study in order to determine the

There are more affects then the known effects of genetically modified food. If excess damage comes from genetic modified food, trophic levels can be damaged. Damage to trophic levels can ultimately affect how America receives food because plant growth is endangered. A clear understanding of both the affects and dangers of genetically modified food is important because the people should know the things that are potentially affecting
