The purpose of this paper is to explore the concept of interprofessional teamwork and patient outcomes in the scenario of a gastroenterology outpatient endoscopy suite. A gastroenterology outpatient suite is a specialized unit where many professionals come together to ensure a smooth patient experience for individuals needing a colonoscopy or other similar exams. It can be extremely difficult to do whats best for our patients without being compassionate. Compassion is not something that you have, or you don’t. In my opinion, compassion can be enhanced through interprofessional teams. One way to do so is by creating an open floor in the workspace where all team members have the opportunity to share their experiences and perspectives on patient care. In our office, we have weekly meetings where all staff members participate and discuss concerns and successes. By doing so, team members can develop a shared understanding of patient needs and concerns, leading to improved collaboration and better patient outcomes. These team meetings also lead to trust and help us brainstorm new ideas to better our patient experiences. These sessions are extremely important as it allows healthcare professionals to voice their opinions and discuss their emotions. Instead of bottling up feelings and opinions, they get to let them out and obtain positive feedback from their colleagues. This helps build morale, team trust and reduces burnout as now providers feel like they are part of a team instead of on their own (Henshall et al., 2020).
Implementing regular debriefing sessions can also impact the culture of the unit or organization by promoting a culture of support and teamwork. When team members feel supported and heard, they are more likely to engage in open communication and collaboration, leading to improved team dynamics and overall job satisfaction.
In terms of patient outcomes, a resilient healthcare team can provide more effective and efficient care. Resilient teams are better equipped to handle stressful situations, make effective decisions, and work together to address patient needs. This can lead to much better patient conditions and less patients returning to the hospital
