For several years, the United States has been called multiple names concerning their obesity problems. There is one that America has been living up to, and has even been proud of until recently. Countries now label the United States as the “obese nation”. It all has to do with the horrific correlation of fast food and obesity. From time to time the nation has lived to that name, but now it has become no more than just a myth. Cultural norms, healthy habits, technology, and disease awareness have been changing the way Americans consume fast food. Television commercials and other media have caused negative influences among young age groups when it comes to fast food consumption. Television, for example, targets a much younger audience due to the number of hours younger kids spend on the TV. Most of the commercials seen on TV or heard on the radio advertise an unhealthy lifestyle, such as fast food places like McDonalds or Burger King, leading the younger audience to live off of unhealthy choices that will later lead to problems such as obesity. Children are the most vulnerable to these types of commercials seen on Nickelodeon or Disney Channel; they are targeted because they are most likely to be drawn in by the colors and “cool” toys offered by the fast food restaurant. However, times have been changing and the media has been portraying the reality of fast food. The harsh conditions animals are put through in order to make these foods are being shown and also the amounts of chemicals that are put in the food that are served in all fast food places are being exposed.
