Is standardized testing the only way to determine growth in a student’s education or how much progress a school makes year to year? In the United States, state governments set educational standards, and often mandate public schools K-12 to standardized testing. The No Child Left Behind Act of 2001, or No Child Left Behind (NCLB) was put into action. NCLB requires federally funded schools to administer a statewide standardized test annually to all students. Test scores are used to show school improvement and how well the school is academically. In some cases, these tests show to cause more stress than record progress. With the test scores being the way to track progress and growth, teachers end up teaching the test versus going deeper into a subject. While some educators feel standardized testing can reduce stress, many students are falling through the cracks in the classrooms from the pressure of passing or failing. Educators, for years have relied on standardized testing to provide information on a student’s progress throughout the year. However, since standardized testing was introduced, much has changed.
