Invention of the Atomic Bomb and its Effects on America and the World On August 6, 1945; The first atomic bomb was dropped on Hiroshima. It was an unbelievable achievement, beginning a new science in nuclear chemistry and changing the course of future war forever, Yet, it also set the horizon for what seems to be the most powerful and deadly weapon ever used in history, setting the stage for what is now known as the “doomsday” device. The United States for example, never expected the health effects that was the aftermath of the blasts. The first two weeks after the drops, unrelenting health issues began to occur. Due to the radiation and other after-effects of the blasts, diseases began to spread like wildfire, which was never expected when the bombs were dropped, especially to Oppenheimer or the United States.
When Americans began to find out what was happening afterwards, they began to shame the use of the Atomic bombs, even though they praised Truman for his quick decision making. However, Oppenheimer, along with the scientists on the initial Manhattan Project, began to see major potential in a new form of energy, atomic energy. As such, in 1946 and 1947, the United States began to censor information about the atomic bomb’s harmful effects to make atomic energy seem pleasing to the public (Southard).
