After I finish my AA degree at Hillsborough Community College, I plan to transfer to a four-year college where I will earn a Bachelor’s Degree in Music Education. The school I am most interested in is Florida State University. The school has a beautiful location, offers various music programs, and is home to a multitude of ensembles. I also want to attend the school because of how far it is from my home-town! After attending the University, I intend to get hired as either a high school or middle school teacher; In addition, I also plan to continue composing music, and offering private lessons. Yes, this is slightly intimidating to me, but I still have time to improve and prepare before I transfer. When I do transfer, I will be aiming for the principal jazz ensemble. Because the opportunity is there, and because the experience would benefit me immensely, I want to aim for what will reward me the most. In addition to the main ensembles offered, I also look forward starting or joining a group. Typically, ensembles which are tied to the university, (ones previously stated) will mainly play traditional charts, and might put a modern twist on them. By having a group, however, it would allow me to be more experimental and adventurous with my playing. Florida State University allows student groups to perform regularly on campus, giving these students the chance to express their musical ideas to the rest of the student body. This openness amongst students is something I look forward to at Florida State, because with music, it’s imperative that one is exposed to an abundance of content.
