Formative assessment and summative assessment are 2 different methods that teachers use to monitor students achievement in the classroom, in all grades, in all subject areas and nationwide because when applied in conjunction they are crucial to accomplish students learning goals and meet State Standard Assessments.
Formative assessments are a great tool to identify weak and strength areas in students learning process. They are ongoing informal assessments. Based on its results teacher can adjust lesson plans to provide extra support to target students. For instance, students homework show lack of basic reading comprehension. Thanks to Formative assessments weak learning areas are detected at the very beginning of schools year opening the path to further treatment . Summative Assessments, in the other hand, are formal assessment applied at the end of an instructional period : End of study unit, course or program assessments. They are graded, consequently they are the prefect tool to meet the mandatory FL State Standard Assessments in each one of the subjects areas, measuring the gains and progress of students. Examples of these test are FCAT, , Statewide Science Assessment, Fl Standard Alternative Assessment. This type of assessment are the ones that counts when it comes to pursuing higher education in the future.
