It is important that people who are working with children and young people in a carting environment are aware of, and have read the policies of the setting. These should always be available and easily accessible, many settings ask for individuals to sign to show proof that they have read the policies. This safeguards the organisation and the staff and ensures that a common practice is used in each and every case.

Observation
Systematic observation of children and young people within the care setting is good practice as it helps to notice any vulnerable children or situations; it helps to ensure that planning is related to the specific needs of the individual. Observation enables the child or young person to be monitored with their development, and in their behaviour, this helps to alter the needs of them. Observation can be used to monitor development but also can alert staff if an abusive or exploitive situation has arisen. All observations should be kept confidential within the setting and only those people who have an authority to know should become involved, this includes people like the educational psychologist, social services and the police).
