GSU Personal Statement

Motivation is why I wanted to return to GSU, specifically to learn the psychology behind motivation and its application to the field of education. What would be a better way to find funding for my passion in life if not to write about what I think is the basis to creating a population…a society of lifelong learners. Motivation is essential to becoming a master of any task. I had been motivated after leaving the field of psychology to pay my bills, to become financially stable, only to realize that my lifelong desire to help change education would not dissipate. So motivation led me to walk away from a nice job, not once but twice. During my hiatus from school in 2002-2011, I met three remarkable people. Lauren hosted a dinner party where I met Howard and Chris. We discussed education from every angle and context. At the end of the party Chris said “Daniele, look at GSU’s College of Education’s Educational Psychology program, if you want to fulfill your desire to work in education, then start there.” I graduated from a school right here in Atlanta, I could have attended GSU for my undergraduate on a Hope scholarship, but at the time GSU was transitioning to becoming a major public research university in an urban area. So now more than a decade later, I decided to take some post baccalaureate classes on campus to get an impression. I took an introductory course about educational psychology with professor Judy Orton and knew instantaneously that working in educational psychology would allow me to explore the differing aspects of education that are essential in the idea of creating lifelong learners, more precisely motivation. I also respected the environment of GSU juxtaposed to a city in motion and a new center of diversity and innovation; both Atlanta and GSU symbiotically embody how the beginning of 21st century will be remembered, as an era of education
