In the last 6 weeks, I was playing a group leader role in the DTESB project and learned quite a lot from both the project process and the TOUR 7040 lectures. There are several things that I could do to be able to identify and amplify solution patterns from the group member’s perspective. To begin, as the social worker I would need to make sure I am using language that will help to facilitate members in achieving their goals and seeing the change they desire (Greene & Lee, 2011). This means that I will have to adapt to the language of the group and introduce what is known as novelty into the session (Greene & Lee, 2011). This means that any suggestion, information, or ideas that I provide to the group in regards to different coping mechanisms will not be seen as factual information, but should be seen as just giving them something to think about (Greene & Lee, 2011). By doing this, it will allow the croup members to look at the possibilities of what is being said and they are then able to decide if it is something they would like to discuss or even consider.

About two years ago our unit was assigned a new supervisor. The new supervisor had an investigative background, with no prior knowledge of dealing with gangs or gang culture. Initially, he was very receptive to the fact that certain individuals in the unit were asked to present gang material to schools, businesses, and organizations. In essence, teamwork can be defined as a group of people working in the same direction and for a common purpose. Teamwork requires individuals be a team player and to be able to work well with others; after all, there is no “I” in “Team”! As with any endeavour, we faced some initial setbacks. Although members are quite used to students on placement, understandably my presence at first created feelings of uncertainty, distrust and tension among group members. My own lack of confidence and assertiveness no doubt contributed to this, and although group facilitation required me to establish a relationship with participants, I appreciated that I had to earn the space to do this. Lee (2003), offers an interesting explanation of the difficulties for group facilitators in setting themselves apart from the group, whilst also being acceptable to them. I therefore felt it would be helpful to establish a relationship with the group, before responding to members individually, so that I could observe how each member of the group interacted with others. In doing so I came to understand how group work requires systemic thinking, that recognises how the actions of individuals are linked with the context of the wider group.
