Gun control is the set of laws and policies which regulate the production, sales, transfer, possession, modification, or use of firearms by civilians. The Second Amendment in the Constitution of the United States provides civilians the right to bear arms (Barnet 1). Gun control is a current issue in American society because of gun violent communities, mass shootings of innocent people, and the unknown fear of what firearms are capable of. Most people are unaware of the desire to own guns and function of said firearms (Barnet 2). Gun control should not be applied to law abiding gun owners because it violates the Second Amendment to the Constitution, it will not be a preventative to future gun-related crimes, and it removes a sense of safety …show more content…
This right was given to the people in order to defend themselves from an unruly government as well as domestic and foreign enemies (Barnet 2). When it comes to the modern age this can still be seen in effect as many Americans own firearms. Gun control restricts the citizens of the United States their freedom to own firearms of their choice (10). “Much of the idea of gun control is driven by politics and emotion rather than the actual reasoning behind gun ownership and neglects the meaning behind the Second Amendment” (Barnet 2). This ignorance leaves frustration for those who abide by the gun laws that are non-restrictive but protect reasonable ownership practices and regulations. Before the year 1987, the states of Georgia, Indiana, Maine, New Hampshire, North Dakota, South Dakota, and Washington were the only states at the time that had statues which required state issued permits in order to carry a concealed firearm (Study). By the year 1996 only seven states did not give the right to carry a concealed firearm within the state (Study).
