Food City actually dates all the way back to the early 1900’s in Greeneville, Tennessee. However, K-VA-T Food Stores’ was born in the 1950’s. Founder Jack C. Smith, along with his father Curtis, and uncle Earl, opened the first K-VA-T store in Gundy, Virginia. At first glance the grocery business was hard on the Smith family. Thus, a flood in Grundy was result of closing their competition, and Food City took off. As a result, Food City has grown by leaps and bounds. They made a huge step in the world of business when they bought several Piggly Wiggly stores in the Southwest Virginia and Eastern Kentucky are. They also have many store brands.
