Horace Mann was an American politician and education reformer in the 1800’s. He began his career as a lawyer and a legislator. He was given the first position in the Massachusetts’s board of education in 1837 to help reform education in America. He started a bi-weekly journal called the Common School Journal where he wrote articles for teachers. He wrote about education and the morals needed that came with the job. He also developed the six principals of education, which were both influential and controversial at the time. The ideas in the six principles still prevail today.
