How Are William Mowry And W. E. B. Du Bois Alike

When the U.S. was racially segregated, it was hard to find teaching opportunities. William Mowry and W.E.B. Du Bois attempted to find teaching opportunities during black and white segregation. Their attempts shared similarities with the struggles, but were told from different angles. The stories these men shared their viewpoints on are “Recollections of a New England Educator” by William Augustus Mowry and “The Souls of Black Folk” by W. E. B. Du Bois. William Mowry and W.E.B. Du Bois' experiences with teaching were different but shared similarities. One way Du Bois’s point of view differs from Mowry’s is that Du Bois was looking for a school to teach at and the description of people is more prominent. Du Bois’s story is a must read. The custom talked about in the excerpt demonstrated how Mowry wrote about how he thrived at the school. One more quote from the same text is,” Many quaint stories were told of the tricks of mischievous scholars during the years previous to my experience in that district. At one time when the teacher was not extremely popular, many pranks were played upon him by the big boys.” One fact you can derive from that quote is that Mowry talked booty the students at the school and their behavior. This is yet another difference from Du Bois’s story, talking about the students instead of the journey to the school. As you can see, William Mowry wrote about the pupils he had and the time he had at the school. Mowry talked more about the children at his school and the experience he had with them while attempting to teach at the school. Du Bois was more descriptive with his characters and wrote more about his journey to his job instead of being at the school. Even though these stories contrast, they both talk about educators looking for teaching jobs and the struggle to find opportunities for
