It is my privilege to write this letter of support on behalf of Dr. Kostas Triantis, Professor of Industrial and Systems Engineering for the Alumni Award for Excellence in Advising. I am honored to endorse Professor Triantis, who was my Ph.D. advisor and has remained as a supporting figure throughout my academic career for the last 22 years. I first met Dr. Triantis when I enrolled as a master’s student at Virginia Tech’s Northern Virginia Center in the Fall of 1994. I became attracted to an academic career thanks to my interactions with him. At the end of my master’s program in the summer of 1995, I volunteered to participate in a research project managed by Kostas at the American Red Cross headquarters, and my experience became the motivation to pursue doctoral studies. I always remember his words when he accepted me as his Ph.D. student: “--so Alexandra, we are going to do this together, and we will publish our ideas, and interact with experts in the field and you will have access to the …show more content…
advisor, Kostas was responsible for substantial improvement in my research skills. He provided constructive criticism, and made sure all his students could participate and contribute to the framing of each other’s research problems in weekly lab meetings. He trained us to be good critics and aim to perform meaningful research. He is also a good mediator. His wisdom and the fact he is always accountable to his students, provides a sense of self-assurance. Kostas always remains close to his advisees and my case is by no means the only one where he has played an important role for life.
