InTASC Standard seven provides an in depth outline and guide for effective teachers. It explains the various dispositions, knowledge, and skills a teacher needs to be effective in the classroom.
A teacher needs to have an understanding of essential knowledge regarding learner development. She needs to understand how people learn and the development of learners. For example, a child in elementary school may not be able to sit still through a lengthy math lesson like a child in high school could. It is crucial that the content being taught is developmentally appropriate for the individual.

This can be done on the first day of school as a pre-test to determine what level he or she is functioning on. Because all students function at varying levels of development, it is important to determine where they are in their education. In my field experience, there was a 4th grade girl that was having significant difficulty in spelling so she was placed in a pullout class to provide the accommodations she needed. I was given a list of words to read aloud to her and she was to write them down to spell them. This assessment was used to see what level of words she was having difficulty with, and how to proceed after that. Using that data, the teacher can then decide where to begin in regards to content level. From there, the teacher could use this data to create short-term and long-term goals for her to achieve in order to improve on her spelling. An effective teacher can take the data from a prior-knowledge assessment and create goals aligned with state standards. It is important to provide multiple ways to assess knowledge such as testing, projects, verbal discussions, etc. The teacher could deliver the lesson and then create a class activity in which the students break up into groups to complete an assignment.
