“It had been raining for seven years; thousands upon thousands of days compounded and filled from one end to the other with rain, with the sweet crystal fall of showers and the concussion of storms so heavy they were tidal waves come over the islands…”(Bradbury, 1954) Ray Bradbury’s “All Summer in a Day’ takes place on this imagined version of the planet Venus, where the sun is so rare it is only seen every seven years. Margot is a small nine year old girl that moved to this desolate place when she was four years old. Her classmates are uneducated and jealous, resenting the past experience she has had living on Earth. Her memory of the sun sets Margot apart in her new environment. Ignorance and jealousy from the children cause Margot’s isolation and depression. Bradbury uses craft moves like descriptive language and strategic events to lock in these themes. Bradbury writes: “ So after that, dimly, dimly, she sensed it, she was different and they knew her difference and kept away.”(Bradbury,1954) The children in this story treat her very differently and isolate her, especially after the shower incident, where she wouldn’t let the water touch her because she was so tired of the rain: “...she had refused to shower in the school shower rooms, had clutched her hands to her ears and over her head, screaming the water mustn’t touch her head.”(Bradbury, 1954). Another point of view on this subject is that the children did try to include her, not isolate her. In the beginning, they asked her to play and sang songs with her, but she didn’t participate. However, the children eventually gave up trying to be nice to her because they couldn’t understand why she didn’t want to play.
