The diverse and intricate nature of law, combined with the fact it impacts every individual in society, is what primarily attracted me to study law at degree level. The question of why individuals choose to disobey laws, which are fundamentally established to create a civil and innocuous society, fascinates me.
While studying psychology I found a particular interest in the modules focusing upon internal abnormalities and the failure to function adequately in society. I frequently questioned how mental disorders could cause an individual to violate the laws so plainly known to them, and whether we could justifiably incarcerate someone who could, perhaps, be suffering greatly from mental illnesses. Through reading "What About Law?" and "The Rule of Law" my interest sparked into a genuine love for law as both texts developed my knowledge on the seven central elements of the law and the way in which these structure the English Legal system. …show more content…

Despite this not being the department in which my interest lies, the responsibilities given to me, such as contacting the high court to summon bailiffs to residence and attending meetings with clients only confirmed that the practical element of law also intrigued me. Such duties also highlighted the qualities a successful solicitor needs: impeccable communication skills, empathy but also directness. These all being qualities which I believe to have gained and developed through being elected onto the Sixth Form's student council. Representing my fellow peers provided me with a sense of accountability, a feeling which drove me to present their opinions in a clear and concise manner so to ensure their ideas achieved the recognition they
