Leadership Viewpoint: From a leader’s point of view, we must be able to separate what is true from what is factual or informational, then also what is pure emotional. These three can all be true, but they are not all the truth. Since we established earlier that emotional intelligence is the one thing that must be present in order for someone to be successful, then it is also safe to assume that a good leader must possess emotional intelligence. As a good leader, one must understand, that everything they do is captured, or contained in a process. That is why highly successful persons, often will have great emotional intelligence backed by excellent work ethics. For example, let us go back to the killings in Florida for a moment. Once again, we should establish that this is a tragic thing that has happened. However, now we have so-called news outlets parading a group of young children saying that they possess the answer to the problem. This is purely politics and nothing more. If we were to look at this from a leader’s perspective – then we would have to acknowledge that there is a process, which does not fit into one which emotional intelligence is ruling the day. First, these are children, who are emotionally driven, and as such, they think as children think. The real problem here is that we have adults agreeing with these children. If we were to look at it from a logical standpoint, we cannot disregard the truth and that is that as a child – their bodies, which include their minds, are not fully developed. Anyone who has taken a class on human development knows, and understands that a child will not use their prefrontal cortex to make decisions (because it is not fully developed yet), but instead will use their amygdala (pronounced: e’migdele) to make decisions as well as to solve problems they encounter. This is not to say that emotions are to be disregarded; however, emotions are never the deciding factor when it comes to decisions. This is especially true when a decision involves emotions. Emotional Intelligence is the thing which separates good leaders from great leaders. It separates mildly successful persons from highly successful people. It separates the person who can find and make peace with others and those who can only create turmoil. It is the thing which allows one to keep the job in which they have obtained instead of leaving it. Overall, Emotional Intelligence is on the decline. Today it is often better to become or remain mediocre than to be or become highly successful because in doing so one might offend someone along the way. So, instead the person who is doing absolutely nothing is viewed as being good. These are indeed troubling times when the truth is not the ruling order of the day. Leadership and leadership principles debunk this theory along with the notion that others actually determine one’s success rate. The truth is “we are what we do most often”. One who study leaders and leadership principles will grasp this perception of emotional intelligence. They will not make excuses for shortcomings, or a lack of
