From the time Leonardo was born until the time he was five years old, he lived in the hamlet of Anchiano. Leonardo's dad took custody of Leonardo because Leonardo's mother was just a peasant woman named Caterina who married someone else and moved to a neighboring town. Caterina and Messer were never married. Caterina may have been a slave from the Middle East. In total, Leonardo had seventeen half siblings.
