The biggest difference between leaders and managers is that, leadership is doing the right things; while, management is doing things right. Although their skills may overlap leaders are more concerned with the broad organizational mission or vision, and managers are concerned with operational details. People lead using many different styles. You can be an affiliative leader, an autocratic leader, a democratic leader, a laisse-faire leader, a transformational leader or a servant. Affiliative leaders focus on boarding relationships and team building. Autocratic leaders are independent in their decision-making. Democratic leaders facilitate the input from members of the organization. Laissez-faire leaders provide resources, but give little direction. With every conversation we have, positive or non-positive relationships are formed. The feelings of these relationships are evident in future interactions between individuals. It is important to establish good relationships with employees. To face communication is a mixture of verbal words, tone of voice, and visual body language. Mixed messages can occur when a person's words say one thing, and their voice or body language depict something else. To avoid misunderstandings we should beware of our verbal and nonverbal signals. When having conversations think about your voice rate, volume, intonation, pitch. Warm, genuine, flowing speech is more positive then hesitant, tense, rapid speech. Nonverbal communication accounts for more than 90% of the wave messages are received; pay attention to posture, distance between parties, facial expressions, hand movements, sitting position, and eye movement and contact when trying to communicate effectively. Barriers that effect communication include physical barriers, status differences, time constraints, word choices, and cultural and gender related differences. The best way to understand the content of a conversation is to listen actively. Active listening is the act of hearing with thoughtful intention. People have a hard time listening actively because we can understand more words per minute
