Recent survey’s have found that alcohol is consumed by 52% of Americans, 27% of Americans consume tobacco, and 8% of American’s consume marijuana. (Ten Reasons Why). The concern that marijuana use will increase if legalized is a ligament argument, but can be refuted easily. When only 8% of American’s are using the substance, it is obvious that the percentage will increase because something that you would normally get arrested doing is now being legalized. People will be experimenting with marijuana, but not everyone will continue to use it regularly. Marijuana use does not. Alcohol use is linked to cancer. Marijuana use has been proven to help fight cancer. Alcohol use increases the risk of injury to the consumer. Marijuana use does not. Alcohol use can contribute to violent behavior. Marijuana use does not. Alcohol use contributes to abuse and sexual assault. Marijuana use does not. There are so many factors that prove that marijuana is better for you than the consumption of alcohol, but yet our government has no problem providing alcohol at almost any given time. It is illegal to drink and drive, but yet our government offers alcohol at gas stations. If anything they are promoting drinking and driving. “It is an established scientific fact that marijuana is not toxic to humans; marijuana overdoses are nearly impossible, and marijuana is not nearly as addictive as alcohol or tobacco. Aaron White states that, “ Marijuana seems to yield considerable medical benefits for many Americans with aliments ranging from glaucoma to cancer.” (White). There are 2 main active chemicals in marijuana that researchers believe have medicinal applications. They are cannabidiol (CBD) and tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). They are constantly being told that marijuana makes you lazy, that you won’t become successful, and that it’s a gateway to other illegal drugs. Although all of these aspects are definitely possibilities of smoking marijuana, they are in no way an actual side effect from the drug. If you smoke for the first time you will most likely end up cuddled on the couch eating Doritos and watching Family Guy, but there is nothing wrong with being a couch potato for the night. Regular users can go about their days as if they never even smoked the marijuana because their bodies are already used to the THC. Some heavy marijuana smokers are at risk to develop some of the same health risks that cigarette smokers do, such as bronchitis, but that only applies to the individuals that are smoking multiple times everyday. The wonderful thing about legalizing marijuana is people are given the opportunity to have edible marijuana infused treats rather than just smoking it. That way if you truly are concerned with developing a respiratory illness’ you can avoid it and still be given the opportunity to receive the same high, if not a better
