Online Education and Instructional Design
Online education is a growing attraction for many learners who may be unable to attend a traditional brick-and-mortar classroom. Attendance in online courses are growing exponentially each year; however, it is expected that registered students will level out in the next couple of years. Even with the amount of students attracted to online learning, instructional designers are faced with developing curriculum which attracts and maintains the learners’ level of interest and varied learning styles. Although online education utilizes similar factors and pedagogical methods as its traditional education counterpart, the structure

There are 7 major learning styles; logical, solitary, tactile, social, kinesthetic, visual and aural (Overview). Each of these styles, which are properly identified can enable any learner endless possibilities in processing and retaining information. Learning styles are important factors for curriculum. Course developers need to take into account that not all students learn the same. A student who prefers a solitary learning environment may thrive with an online course whereas, a tactile learner needs a hands-on, touchy, feely classroom. Regardless of the learning style, it will be a huge accomplishment to the curriculum developer to integrate all learning styles into any single …show more content…
The ADDIE model (figure 1) of instructional design contains five phases that facilitate the process of the creation of educational courses. ADDIE stands for analysis, design, developments, implementation, and evaluation (Culatta). These components are a process of steps that can be used to develop several varieties of online curriculum courses. The model can aid in successful student learning by creating courses which address the needs of the learners. It begins with analyzing the overall goals and objectives of the course and the students’ learning styles. Then the design phase begins and overall objectives are established so that materials can be designed. Appropriate activities, quizzes and tests are determined for the course. In the development phase is where a scope and sequence is planned out in efforts to get the course running smoothly; integrating various methods to learning. Next is the implementation phase where the course is there facilitator is trained, the students are taught, assessments are given. Lastly, is the evaluation phase where feedback is collected to analyze the success of the course. Once the learning styles and the ADDIE model are set in place to develop a course, the last component needed to make sure that online curriculum is adequately developed, are the 6 categories of Bloom’s
