Leadership Philosophy

My definition of leadership: a selfless act to inspire others to continue with or accomplish any dream, mission, task or deed. I joined the Coast Guard in May of 1999, Golf 155 was my company of employment. Many influences of leadership have spoken to my core since boot camp. Whether the leadership examples were poor in nature or positive examples of leadership, I always tried to have an open mind and was hungry to learn. My first leadership example that sticks out to me was immediately upon reporting to CGC STORIS, BM2 Jackson, took me under his wing and showed me the way forward in a foreign new environment of a Coast Guard cutter in Kodiak, AK. He took the time to show me the entire cutter, sleeping arrangements, went over the daily routine, and ensured me that I would eventually be a leading seaman in deck department if I applied myself to the commands expectations. As the days continued, BM2 Jackson continued to show me and others how to complete task and trained us all to work together as a team. My next positive leadership that sticks out in to me was at Station Frankfort, Michigan. Chief Petty Officer Mallory was a fine example of superb leadership. He always seemed to bring out the best in all people that worked around him. His positive attitude was very contagious and is joyfully spirit controlled the station environment. I received my first true failure in the Coast Guard under his command after failing a coxswain check ride. I will be truthful to the aspects and values of each person to accomplish Coast Guard missions at every level under or above my position. I will communicate my expectations of individuals under my leadership and strive to be receptive to suggestions for the good of a mission, unit, or command under Coast Guard policy. I will always value and consider your input. Family is an essential part of Coast Guard member under my consideration as your leader. Whether you are married, have children, or are a single member, I will consider your needs away from work. I strongly believe your experience at work affects your attitude at home and your experience at home affects your attitude at work. The two are interconnected. I will always consider your needs and be available to listen and assist in allowing time away from work if operational commitments allow. Lastly I will look to grow my own leadership thru continued evaluation and efforts of teamwork, missions, tasks, or events for the good of the Coast Guard and it’s
