My Leadership Philosophy

The path to discovering one’s leadership style and philosophy can be very tedious and difficult. There are many theories in the practice of leadership. This paper will describe the journey that I have begun in order to identify my leadership style, strengths and philosophy. It will look at three key leadership terms and provide definitions of each. This will also discuss two leadership theories that I have found to shape my leadership practice. Within this paper my leadership vision will also be introduced. This vision will be a brief look at the change I will make as I implement my leadership philosophy and practice. It is influencing a desire in others to achieve a vision for change that has been set before them. “Leadership is a relationship between those who aspire to lead and those who choose to follow” (Kouzes & Posner, 2017, p. 25). It is creating a vision that will cultivate change that is ultimately desired by both the leader and the follower. Having a vision is the essences of leadership and it is key that the leader is able articulate their vision.

Followers play and important role in the arena of leadership. Being a follower means one that can be directed by another and can rise to the expectations of the work that is required of you. The follower is a supporter of the vision that has been brought forth by the leader. The roles and contributions of followers cannot be ignoring as they are vital to attaining the vision of the leader. 317). Authentic leadership is knowing what you are capable of doing as well as knowing when to ask for help. It is about being transparent to the follower and showing them that you are vulnerable and that you are not afraid to ask for assistance. When followers see this behavior in a leader they will trust in that leader and do more for them to accomplish the goal at hand. The authentic leader embraces who they really are and use this knowledge to their advantage. They do not care about what others may think of them and they are not in this business of people pleasing. Their emotional intelligence is at a higher level which helps them to understand that their decisions and actions will affect others. The authentic leader is able set the vision and the goals of the organization ahead of my own interest. According to Kouzes and Posner (2017), “if you want to lead others, you must put principles and purpose ahead of everything else” (p. 111). They are also able to analyze information objectively so that they can make proper
