My Leadership Philosophy

I. My Definition of Leadership: Effective leadership involves develop trusting relationships, collaborating with others and listening to the beliefs, values and perspectives of staff, parents, students and community members. They genuinely care, and have the ability to encourage and inspire others to stretch beyond what is comfortable; to improve. Leading by example, and understanding the importance of being visible, leaders demonstrate an attitude of “we are in this together” along with providing guidance and support. Students remain at the forefront as leadership decisions are made for the greater good; an intended outcome for the community.

Delivering teacher evaluation overview and training to teachers and administrators allowed me to develop a “thicker skin” and reminded me to think about principles above personalities. I quickly learned how to deliver important information to an audience of experienced professionals, making change manageable.
□ The most important lesson learned is to not take situations personally, but instead look at feedback objectively and use the information to make future changes in my own instruction. This is easier said than done, I can say, I shed more than a few tears the first year. The experiences helped to build my leadership skills.
□ I will never forget presenting a training on instructional strategies to 135 paraeducators just before the start of their school year! By the end of the day, participants took away strategies that they could use in the classroom and appreciated not only the content but the laughter as well. The day ended with excitement for the upcoming school year. I realized, if I could lead a group of this size I had the ability to lead and motivate others.

My supervisor went on to describe all of the qualities necessary for participation and then pointed out, I would be perfect for the job. She saw something in me I didn’t see in myself. As it turns out, I not only scored portfolios for many years, I eventually was asked to become a teacher in residence for CSDE.
□ Working with colleagues and fellow teacher’s in residence gave me the opportunity to work closely with adults, develop seminars and provide support to beginning teachers and mentors. The group worked together as a collaborative community to discuss and make changes to the process throughout my three-year term.
□ I am fortunate to be part of a team of education specialists who share their professional expertise and knowledge. The work is challenging, requires innovative thinking and the ability to work closely and collaboratively with adults. I remember applying for the position after one of my colleagues strongly encouraged me to do so. The words she used to describe why I would be a great fit for the position gave me courage I needed. Leaders motivate and inspire others to “believe because I believe”.
