Introduction Throughout the medical profession there are many great leaders and managers that portray leadership skills to help their facilities, units or organization run smoothly and effectively. Every leader will have different leadership styles based on the group of people they have working for them, the area or unit they are working in, the management or leadership position they are placed in, as well as own personal experiences. Having the opportunity to shadow a nurse leader gave me an insight to just how important their job is and all the detail and hard work that is put into it. Whether you are a student or having been working for 10 years, every individual will require different learning strategies or portrait different leadership style strategies. Leaders can either make or break an experience for their employees with their leadership styles. In the nursing profession there are many mentors and different work experiences that will be encountered, some will have positive impacts as well as some negative. Personally, as a nursing student today I have been able to have a few of these experiences myself throughout clinicals. I have had mentors who absolutely loved teaching, where some mentors disliked teaching and would rather not have student. I have been a leader during class assignments, I help to delegate tasks, have open communication with all group members to make sure we are all on the same page and to share ideas regarding the project. As a leader I try to involve all members and get everyone’s feedback, I like to allow for all members to share ideas because everyone looks at things differently and can come up with different ideas that can help add to the project. Having open communication, teamwork and trust are very important to me when in a leadership position. Helping others if they do not understand something, or helping them look at things from a different perspective can also be important when working with a group of people. When taking on a leadership role, it is also important for me to not judge others and make sure everyone is treated the same. When thinking about the type of leader I would like to work for in the future I think of all the things I have previously stated. I aspire to work for a leader who is compassionate about their work, overall patient care, and their employee satisfaction and safety. I wish to worker for a leader that listens to employee feedback and strives to make changes that help better overall patient and family care, as well as employees.
