Right now, Medicare is America’s health insurance program for anyone over the age of sixty-five, people who have documented disabilities under the age of sixty-five, and people who suffer from End Stage Renal Disease. A countless number of people look towards Medicare as a sense of stability when they become elderly or sick. Although Medicare does cover numerous basic medical appointments, it fails to cover many long-term medical conditions. Ever since former President Barack Obama, passed the Affordable Care Act, also known as Obamacare, in 2010, over twenty million Americans have garnered medical insurance. Earlier this year, a poll was released stating that only a mere 17% of people supported the idea of Trumpcare (Board), and since then that number has surely decreased. I would think Trump and his party would look at that percentage and realize what they are doing is dishonorable, and not the popular opinion of Americans. During his Presidential campaign, Trump preached to “cut taxes, protect Social Security and Medicare from cuts, [and] provide health insurance to all Americans” (Krugman), but from the looks of it he is going to do the exact opposite of his campaign proposals. A commenter on the New York Times by the name of Dominic mentioned that this is “not the mark of a great nation. A great nation does not squeeze and harass the sick and the ill at their most vulnerable moments” (Dominic). He argues that we are indeed a powerful nation, and I agree with him. This makes it that much more vital that we provide universal health care to all our citizens. Some might object that the United States is much too large to provide healthcare for all, but I find this hard to believe since other large countries, such as Italy, Spain, and Greece have successfully passed such health care plans.
