The Epidemic Known as Obesity There is an epidemic in America, and it is called obesity. According to mayoclinic.org “Obesity is a complex disorder involving an excessive amount of body fat.” About ⅓ of American adults and children are obese. Obesity can cause very serious health issues. Since it is very negative, why are there so many people in this nation that are obese? It could be their diet, exercise habits, or they do not think they have time to control their weight. There are many different reasons and causes which will be covered in this essay. Obesity can lead to negative health problems a few of which are; coronary heart disease, heart failure, high blood pressure, stroke, type 2 diabetes, abnormal blood fats, metabolic syndrome, cancer, osteoporosis, sleep apnea, reproductive problems, and gallstones. Some of the health problems are not as severe as others. Heart failure, coronary heart disease, osteoporosis and cancer are some of the most severe, and can lead to death if not properly treated. Health problems are very common in people which are obese. Many do not realize they have the diseases until it is too late. People do not spend enough time making food or shopping for the right type of food, they want something quick and easy. There are many quick and easy options for food whether it is buying something at the grocery store and keeping it in the freezer or buying fast food. People need to step back and realize that even though the food is faster and you put less effort into it, it is not a good source of nutrition. Not only is time about food but it is also about exercise. Take an hour out of the day and exercise, it helps in many different areas of life. People do not make enough time for themselves.
