Crossing my arms and scrunching my nose, I declared—with conviction—that my tummy could eat no more. Undaunted, my grandmother, reminded me of all of the starving children in the world and convinced me to finish my sandwich. At this point, I did not know the astonishing fact that across the globe obesity causes more deaths than starvation. Also, within the past twenty years, the global obesity rate climbed eighty-two percent. Food quantity and quality and physical activity collectively contribute to the obesity epidemic.
First, one can find the most obvious culprit behind weight gain in overeating. As obesity rates increase, fast food consumption and portion sizes increased significantly, and “these trends are also thought to be contributors

Defined as a disease, obesity not only resides in America but worldwide primarily in developed countries (Devaux). Statistics found that “More than one in two adults and nearly one in six children are overweight or obese in OECD [Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development] countries.” Obesity not only affects the quality of living, by decreasing physical capabilities, but it leads to more serious health issues. With so many diagnoses and widespread effects, obesity directly relates to the global escalation in heart diseases, diabetes, hypertension, and cancer (Weight). Sadly the effects of this epidemic resulted in “About 5.3 million of the 57 million deaths worldwide in 2008” (Park). Commonly ignored, these blaring effects should bring a wake-up call to individuals struggling with extra weight or obesity.
