Papa John’s has attempted to differentiate their brand by offering better ingredients (Papa John’s, 2017). Papa John’s is the first national pizza delivery chain to announce the removal of artificial flavors and synthetic colors, high fructose corn syrup, preservatives BHA and BHT, flavor enhancer MSG, and cellulose and partially hydrogenated oils (Papa John’s, 2017). The company has created an ancient grains gluten-free crust. This was a great strategic move seeing that gluten-free food sales grew 178% from 2013-2016 and continues to trend upwards (Papa John’s, 2017). Papa John’s earned the highest marks in product quality in the individual ACSI rating and reinforces their dedication by investing over $100 million dollars to improve products and ingredients (Papa John’s, 2017). Digital ordering has become a highly competitive battleground for pizza chains (Maze, 2017). Organizations are investing large amounts of capital to increase digital operation, especially mobile apps (Maze, 2017). Papa Track has been extremely successful for Papa John’s. The mobile app allows customers to track the process of their order through making, baking, boxing, on its way, and delivered (Papa John’s, 2017).
Currently Papa John’s and Dominos get more than 60% of their orders through digital channels (Maze, 2017). I foresee this number to continually rise. Digital ordering could lead to improved labor efficiency over time (Maze, 2017). With this in mind, I would foresee Papa John’s focusing more on their ingredient expenses rather than labor expenses. Sponsorship will also be a major expense for the organization. After the NFL debacle, they will need to secure the right type of sponsorship to promote the organization. The separation for the NFL resulted in tanking stocks (Meyer, 2018).
