Patagonia has a mission statement that states, “Build the best product, cause no unnecessary harm, use business to inspire and implement solutions to the environmental crisis.” Through my reading of the case study I was able to understand prides themselves in their values much more than focusing on what the future holds for the company. I drew that from the manner in which they connect their values to their methods focused on being a sustainable company, while avoiding to think about about their possible positions in the future. When looking at the structure of Patagonia we can see the areas in which they focus on which is quality, social, environment and innovations. In the instructions the first paragraph ends with the notion that Patagonia is on a quest for growth and profitability. The growth is feasible, but creating profit would be difficult to imagine. Lawler went on to state, “The “problem” with the sustainable effectiveness approach is that it takes strong leadership at the top of a corporation to put it in place and a willingness to live with the reality that at least in the short-term it may not be the most profitable way to run a corporation. Thus, there is the issue of why a corporation should commit itself to this approach.” (Lawler III) The question is how soon would profit be made for a company who is continuously looking to “experiment”? In explaining their Business Philosophy Yvon Chouinard states, “Applying this philosophy to Patagonia, he oriented its goal away from profits and toward “doing things right.”” (Patagonia, pg. 2). The question will be how much are they willing to invest and for how long. It will cost millions of dollars and profit would not be substantial until a few years
