I'm a sophomore and I plan to learn Spanish in a different country where I can apply skills from the classroom at Northern Illinois University. I have taken FLSP 102 through FLSP 211, and currently taking FLSP 311 and 320. I am applying because I interested in seeing what the world has to offer. Not many people are able to study abroad because of the expensive cost, but having aid to assist me with means a great deal by not having to worry about paying loans back in the future.
I am majoring in Spanish and would like to study abroad because I think that being immersed in another culture and country can enhance my experience for when I become a teacher. I believe that after experiencing a life abroad, I could use this experience to help others. I am planning to live with a host family; living with a family can help me learn how Spaniards interact with one another. I also hope that I will be more comfortable speaking Spanish and be able to come out of my comfort zone. I think being integrated in a place where I can wander around the city and learn the their customs and traditions is a great way to learn the language.
I am in the Foreign Language Residence Program (FLRP), I am a part of the Spanish organization. FLRP is an intercultural club that promotes diversity and language learning in an inclusive setting. As a member of the Foreign Language Residence Program, I live in a living learning community where other language speakers live. This organization has helped me with my language speaking skills. Last year, I was not as fluent as now, also I was unable to understand native speakers but now I understand a majority of what they say while last year I only understood less than half. I have been a member for two years
