Understanding and helping people has long been a driving force in my life. Since I was little, I have always been one to volunteer wherever I could, working together with others to promote a cause. l have also always been curious about how the human psyche works. Questions such as, “ What makes people work best in a team together?” and “How can I make an organization become more efficient through incentives that appeal to people?” fascinated me throughout college, and I realized that I wanted to pursue a career in human resources. My interests in analyzing different scenarios, listening, and my attention to detail would also prove to be very helpful in this field. To properly adapt to a job in human resources, understanding human reactions and decision making are extremely important. As a freshman in college, I chose the Psychology and Social Behavior (PSB) major because of my interest in human behavior and teamwork. By understanding human development and people’s reactions, I believe that I am better prepared for the field of Human Resources. As human resources, a person needs to understand how to create an environment that will allow employees to perform to the best of their abilities. Further on in my college career, I decided to supplement the PSB major with a minor in Management. Taking courses in management is vital for understanding the hiring and training process and selecting employees that best fit a corporation. Through workshops, presentations, and creating a warm environment, we aimed to increase our clientele’s capabilities and confidence levels. As an intern of WHW, not only do we help teach the classes and workshops, we also learn a lot from our clients. Many of our clients have held job positions before, so they know what the job requires and provide insightful advice to soon to be college graduates. I take great joy in being a part of this organization as I am able to make a difference that can almost immediately be seen and felt. By working together, our team was able to bring hope and new meaning to the lives of veterans, recently laid off employees, single mothers, and recent college graduates who had given up hope of meaningful work and financial security.
