Indiana Tech University Human Resource Management (HRM) is the system used by an organization to manage their people. The majority of the responsibility of Human Resources is recruitment, employee compensation, benefits, and outlining/devising work. HRM is used to optimize the effectiveness of the employees to maximize productivity. As Edward L. Gubman (1996) stated in the Journal of Business Strategy, "the basic mission of human resources will always be to acquire, develop, and retain talent; align the workforce with the business; and be an excellent contributor to the business. Those three challenges will never change."

Hance, the main modern day issues that companies are having to address are managing a growing business, while providing the workforce a better balance of work and family life. Louisville Gas and Electric are using different approaches in the design of work to alleviate these issues. The approaches they are using are alternative work pattern, task revision, dealing with technostress, skill development, and telecommuting.
Alternative Work Patterns are those hours that vary or deviate from the standard work hours. Mr. Hance stated that Louisville Gas and Electric use the alternative work patterns flexible time, nonstandard work week employment, and part-time employment job sharing. They have a number of employees that work a rotating 12 hour shift for the jobs that require a 24 hour presence.
Louisville Gas and Electric has had good success using task revision. Task revision is a resourceful way to amend an incorrectly specified role or job. Task revision presumes that organizational roles and job expectations definitions may be correct or may have been incorrect. When the job is correct, the employee fits the role and performance seems to be higher. Incorrectly defined jobs leads to performance suffrage because of the underlying deviant behavior. Technostress is where someone feels anxiety or feels mental pressure from overexposure or association with information technology. According to Mr. Hance, Louisville Gas and Electric has an older generation of workers; 30% of the workforce will be retiring in the next three years. The older generation seem to suffer from the technostress more than the younger age group. Louisville Gas and electric have made changes over the last few years to help deal with technostress. They have upgraded applications to use more user-friendly software. They provide an ever-present system of training and education for the available technology. The Service Desk is always available to assist all employees with technology assistance and basic training. To eliminate technostress, the company has implemented a staying healthy program, they promote the concept of taking more frequent breaks, and focus on building a teamwork
