Personal Statement: A Career In Education

I have always known that I would go into a career that would pertain to the advocacy of children. When I started my education at Simmons I found a passion for working with high school students, and now, I cannot imagine doing anything different with my life. I currently work at a high school in Dorchester MA, and I wish I could be in the classroom full time. I know that once I graduate, I am going to be a high school English teacher. When I leave Simmons I’m not sure where I want to teach, but I know I want to work in an inner city school. My plan is to either stay in Boston, or move to New York, or Chicago. I want to work in an education system that has previously failed our students, and be a part of the movement that will start to bring those children back up from the cracks. I’m extremely passionate about working in low-income areas because I understand what it is like to be financially devastated, and I want to stop the pattern America has gotten itself into. I have always been creative and imaginative, so it seems appropriate that I settled upon English as my choice of subject. However, my passion for 19th century poetry and Toni Morrison novels are not the only things driving me towards becoming a teacher of English. Simmons College has guided me towards finding my voice as a leader. I want to be able to guide my future students towards a similar place. I want every student I work with to feel as though their voice is important and worthy; I think that’s why ultimately I decided on teaching
