Personal Statement: A Career In Primary Education

“Teaching today is more challenging than at any point in our nation’s history, in large part because our society is changing...” (Kauchak & Eggen, 2014). I began going to USF in hopes to find my path in life and see where I would go and what interested me the most. Through trial and error of classes and majors, I had a moment of realization and going to school to teach children became an idea, and then a reality. I hope to obtain a teaching certification in primary education and be able to work with young children, who are just beginning to open their eyes to the world and all of its wonders. Resilient students are students at risk who have been able to rise above adverse conditions to succeed in school and in other aspects of life” (Kauchak & Eggen, 2014). Trying to relate to students and understanding their struggles is one of the most important ways to impact a student’s life. I know for me personally, having an instructor who honestly cares, makes learning more engaging and worthwhile. Creating a safe space for students like a “home away from home” is a great way to allow students to become comfortable and begin opening up. Continuing to keep students engaged in learning by creating an end goal starts to show them that hard work pays off. Creating and maintaining milestones and expectations for students will brew the ideas of responsibility and leadership in their minds. No child is a “lost cause”, no child should ever be put down or hindered because of their background or experiences. There are ways that teachers can influence a student to become excited to learn and eager to find positive ways to improve their lives, the teacher just needs to find a spark and unleash the potential that the individual
